For many years, Jim Stevens hosted a late summer wagon ride at his farm that he called the
"Birthday Ride" to celebrate the birthdays of the many members of the Southern Indiana Draft Horse and Mule Association whose birthday fell in August. Since Jim is no longer able to host a ride, Eddie Mills
decided to invite everyone to a "Birthday" wagon ride at the Southern Indiana Horsemans Club in Tell City, Indiana over the weekend of August 13-15, 2021.
People started arriving on Friday afternoon and there was a nice size group on hand by the time evening arrived. The area had been undergoing some uncomfortable
weather with high temperatures and even higher humidity, but the forecast called for relief from the sweltering weather over the weekend. Sure enough,
when Saturday arrived, the weather was much nicer with cloud cover all day which made it very comfortable. There were 9 teams and wagons ready to roll.
Unfortunately, Gary Hubert's team managed to tear the brake master cylinder off his wagon before we could even leave, so he dropped out. We took a leisurely 10 mile
drive from the Horsemans Club over to the camp of former club president, the late Danny Joe Sommer or "Rabbit" as he was known to many. His widow Alice met us
there while we ate lunch and marveled at the many changes that had been made to the old deer camp that we had ridden from so often in the past. After lunch we returned
to the Horsemans Club where we were treated to a delicious supper meal of hamburgers cooked on the club's "chuck wagon" along with all of the usual fixin's.
After eating, everyone sat around and some drank a few adult beverages while enjoying the camaraderie that comes from being with friends. Most everyone packed
up early on Sunday and headed home as there were animals at home to be fed and there a threat of rain in the area, but all agreed that Eddie had done a great job
of putting on a most enjoyable affair!
